March Kindness Day – Thursday, March 16th, 2017

March Kindness Day – Thursday, March 16th, 2017

Thursday, March 16th, we celebrate MARCH KINDNESS DAY!

Kindness Theme:  I’M LUCKY BECAUSE…

Building a foundation of GRATITUDE in our classrooms has proven to help impact the prevention of Bullying and Cyber-Bullying. Each of us can help bring happiness to our children and students. GRATITUDE has transformed many lives. It is true that our focus can stimulate growth. If each of us can focus on the good and what we are grateful for, more comes into my life and our students will follow our example. Conversely, if our children/students listen to us complain and focus on the negative, more of that is drawn into each of our lives. We find that the fruit of the focus on GRATITUDE will be HAPPINESS.

PRINCIPALS and SCHOOL COUNSELORS: Please remind your student throughout this week to WEAR THEIR KINDNESS T-SHIRTS ON THURSDAY!  We recommend reminding your parents in your monthly school newsletter. Please encourage your staff to also wear their Kindness T-Shirts. The Kindness T-Shirt is such a valuable visual learning tool that each student has. The message and constant reminder can truly help make a difference in the lives of your students.

TEACHERS: Please take the first 10-15 minutes of your school day on Thursday and dedicate it to our Kindness Theme. If you have the time throughout that day or throughout the week to do a Kindness Day Activity,  it is available below. It’s import to invest education time in helping educate the hearts of our children. Your example and investment will make a difference. Below is a GRATITUDE YouTube Video that you can share on your smart boards on Kindness Day morning to jump-start your GRATEFUL DAY, the message is “EVERYTHING IS A GIFT”.

Students Gratitude Journal Writing

Gratitude seems to work like a muscle, and the physical action of writing a gratitude list helps develop “gratitude muscles.” A recent study by  Professor Philip Watkins from Eastern Washington University, published in School Psychology Review, showed that those who are the least grateful seem to gain the most from making this effort.  That is good news to those us who may find it hard to start a gratitude list. Challenge the students by asking if they can be thankful for homework or chores. This challenge enables them to see what is good about homework — that it helps them learn and prepares them for school and life.

Keeping a gratitude journal on a daily basis helps students achieve the following:

  • Higher grades
  • Higher goals
  • More satisfaction with relationships, life, and school
  • Less materialism
  • More willingness to give back.

For adults, keeping a gratitude journal enables people to:

  • Be more optimistic
  • Experience more social satisfaction
  • Exercise more often
  • Have less envy and depression
  • Have fewer physical complaints
  • Sleep better.

KINDNESS WEEK JANUARY 2017

The Community Kindness Movement had the opportunity to launch three awesome Kindness Assemblies last week, for Hillsdale and Park Ridge Elementary. We want to give a warm welcome to our 23rd and 24th school that have implemented our annual “Kindness Begins with Me!” Bullying Prevention Program. We greatly appreciate all our KIND SPONSORS for funding 1200+ Kindness T-Shirts for each student and staff member. Idaho Community Foundation Grant

Idaho Community Foundation Grant

Happy December Kindness Day! In the spirit of giving and bringing HOPE and JOY to others, The Community Kindness Movement is excited to announce that they were selected to receive a generous grant award of $3,000, from the Children’s Charities of Idaho Fund, the Miles and Virginia Willard Fund, the Unrestricted Eastern Region Fund, and the grant has been approved and funded by the Idaho Community Foundation. The grant will support the Community Kindness Movement effort in funding schools that have applied for our program through our CKM website. The Idaho Community Foundation grant and other local businesses have made it possible to support 1,122 more students with our “Kindness Begins With Me Program”. The grant funds will purchase yellow Kindness T-Shirts for the students to wear during Kindness Week, throughout the school year on Thursdays, and each monthly Kindness Day.

LAKE RIDGE ELEMENTARY KINDNESS ASSEMBLY

Melissa Nelson, the CKM President commented, “we are very appreciative that the Idaho Community Foundation selected to support the Community Kindness Movement. We are excited to officially announce the schools that will be receiving the grant assistance, Hillsdale Elementary and Park Ridge Elementary. Both schools are excited about empowering a foundation of kindness in their entire student body and faculty with the help of our annual Bullying Prevention/Kindness Program. The Community Kindness Movement will be celebrating a Kindness Week in the first of next year, January 23rd-27th. We invite all schools to join us!

PARK RIDGE ELEMENTARY

Shiloh Kenya, Park Ridge PTA President added, “Park Ridge Elementary PTA originally heard about the Community Kindness Movement last spring at the State PTA convention. We were very impressed with the Founder of the CKM, Melissa Nelson when she shared her personal story and how the CKM evolved. We decided as a PTA, that it was a program that we would love to implement in our school. We are planning on working with our school counselor and the CKM team to build a foundation of kindness in our school. We want to thank our contributing sponsors: Idaho Community Foundation, House of Design, Carlie Seamons Real Estate, Kenyon Enterprises, Park Ridge School, Park Ridge Elementary PTA, and the CKM for making this possible for Park Ridge Elementary.

HILLSDALE ELEMENTARY

Principal Bair and School Counselor, Mrs. Elder,  at Hillsdale Elementary, expressed their appreciation for the Community Kindness Movement in selecting their school for the Idaho Community Foundation grant. They are excited about celebrating their second Kindness Week for the 2016-2017 school year, in January. The yellow Kindness T-Shirts will contribute an important learning visual tool and helpful reminder to the Hillsdale students and faculty. Hillsdale Elementary looks forward to the CKM partnership and shared vision of enriching the lives of their students.

I apologize for the November Kindness Newsletter delay. My family and I have been busy relocating to Boise this last month. We arrived last weekend and are finally getting settled in.  I want to personally thank everyone in our Pocatello/Chubbuck Community that helped the CKM make all this possible for so many schools and students. I will forever be grateful for your kindness. My hope is that each school that was funded Kindness T-shirts and given our Kindness Begins with Me Program, will continue to join us and make it their own.

The CKM desires to continue to help implement our program in more schools throughout the State of Idaho.

We have a WONDERFUL ANNOUNCEMENT coming very soon!

I am thankful for so many wonderful individuals who influence and teach our children every day.  Your KINDNESS and POSITIVE EXAMPLE makes a huge difference in the lives of each one of our kids. Please encourage all your students to wear their Kindness T-Shirts tomorrow and to encourage them to reach out to those special people in their life and tell them why they are THANKFUL for them. Enjoy another wonderful day in spreading KINDNESS!

KINDNESS WEEK will be arriving on MONDAY!

We have made a few edits to our original Kindness Video and encourage all the schools to show it to their students. These visuals are great learning and explanations tools to use. We highly recommend showing our Original Kindness Video on Monday morning or on the day that your school distributes your Kindness T-Shirts. We also made available this year a video that goes along with our Kindness Assembly material. If your school has not scheduled a Kindness Assembly with us, we recommend showing The Science of Kindness Video to your students during the week next week or you’re welcome to show it on a Kindness Day during the school year. All videos will be accessible on our website throughout the year to use and view.

VIDEO TIP: When showing this videos through YouTube, click on the settings wheel button at the bottom right-hand corner, then click on the quality setting and set the video to 720p HD. Try to run through the video before the viewing to your student in order to make sure that the video has finished buffering.
